Underground Cathedrals of Canelli

These are kilometers of tunnels and galleries carved directly into the tuff rock of the hills between the 16th and 19th centuries. Only in these spaces—whose silence evokes the atmosphere of ancient cathedrals and are protected by millennia-old earth—could the right temperature and constant humidity be found to refine fine wines and sparkling wines, which still mature here today, awaiting their journey to tables around the world. From this extraordinary setting began the project that led to the recognition of the Piedmont Vineyard Landscapes as Italy’s 50th UNESCO World Heritage Site. This recognition highlights the unique and centuries-old relationship between viticulture and the wine industry, where nature and human labor have been harmoniously integrated. The four Underground Cathedrals currently open to visitors are the historic cellars of four prestigious wine houses: Bosca, Contratto, Coppo, and Gancia.

Roccaverano

It is the small capital of the Langa Astigiana, the highest village in the area, embodying the mountain spirit of the entire region. Perched in isolation atop the large hill dividing the two Bormida valleys, and encircled by a ring of towers that for centuries served as its defense, Roccaverano is immersed in a landscape of forests and terraces, farmhouses and pastures. It exudes a mythical atmosphere, seemingly suspended beyond time and space. Every house, doorway, and carved or painted image in its churches tells a story—rich in history and the events of centuries past. Roccaverano is especially famous for its cheese: Robiola di Roccaverano..

Acqui Terme

Acqui Terme is a charming spa town, already renowned in Roman times for its steaming waters. Nestled like a rare gem among vineyards and landscapes recognized in 2014 as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for their breathtaking beauty, it lies in the heart of Upper Monferrato. The impressive remains of the Roman aqueduct, stretching along the Bormida River, stand as a testament to how water has always been the lifeblood of this city.

Tour of the 5 Towers

At the far edge of the province of Asti, nearly bordering Liguria, the Langa Astigiana is a land of great charm for many reasons: the altitude of its hills, where vineyards gradually give way to hazelnut groves, pastures, and forests; the climate, influenced by the nearby sea, which allows the blooming of broom flowers and rare orchids; its small medieval villages; and the ancient watchtowers traditionally built to defend against Saracen invasions. All of this is crossed by panoramic roads and trails perfect for hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding. The “Tour of the Five Towers” winds through this territory, connecting the villages of Monastero Bormida, Roccaverano, San Giorgio Scarampi, Vengore, and Olmo Gentile.

Monastero Bormida

The town takes its name from the fact that the castle was originally a monastery. The castle is open to visitors on selected days (during castle open days). Over the Bormida River, you can cross the Romanesque humpback bridge. To admire the village from above, head to the Giant Heart Bench.
